BC Technology for Learning Society has hit its 648 computer goal for the #WelcomeRefugees initiative since November 2015. The initiative was announced by the Honourable Navdeep Bains, who outlined the role Computers for Schools has had to deliver 7,500 computers across Canada. Thanks to funding provided by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada through Computers for Success Canada, BC Technology for Learning Society is pleased to be able to provide free refurbished computers to Syrian Families landing in BC until December 31st 2016, on a first come first served basis. This is a targeted initiative specific to Syrian families, and one that compliments the expanded mandate to support to all new Canadians. This is part of a larger national effort to aid our new friends, neighbors, and community members by providing them with the resources necessary to start anew here in Canada.
BC Tech is working directly with settlement agencies across the province to deliver these computers in a timely manner, and is providing support with a one year limited parts and labour depot warranty from the date the computer is received by the family. Each computer comes loaded with a Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office Suite and skill development software. The support of MOSAIC , the Immigrant Services Society of BC, and other resettlement agencies assist with the transfer of equipment, while the role of BC Tech is to facilitate access to the tools that encourage contribution and participation in the digital economy. BC Tech will continue to support additional Syrian families and other new Canadians thanks to ongoing funding from the Government of Canada.
