Monthly Update - August 2022

Welcome back to our monthly blog! We hope that everyone had a great summer. August has been a busy month for us here at BC Tech. We are very proud of our team’s efforts to get computers into the hands of British Columbians that need access to technology.

Some of our summer CFS+ interns are going back to school this fall. Thank you to Marcus for all of your contributions and hard work this summer. We hope your learning experience was pleasant! We had a number of work experience students come in this summer as well. Thanks for joining us and all your hard work!

Back in June, we hosted our 2022 Donors Recognition event to celebrate all of our incredible donors and partners. The City of Burnaby, recipient of our “Give Where You Live” award was unable to attend the event, but we were excited to finally have the opportunity to deliver it to their doorstep this month. For over 10 years the City of Burnaby has made a significant impact on the local community through their generous donations.

As always, we would like to highlight a few donations that occurred in the month of August. Thank you to first-time donors Thrift Computers. Thanks to your donation we are better able to help those in need of technology. Another special shoutout to Relic Entertainment for their recent donation of 25 computers and 17 monitors. Your donation went to R.C. Palmer Secondary, supporting students requiring access to technology. Thanks to these donations, we were able to reach an exciting milestone of 190,000 computers distributed across BC.

Looking towards September, we are entering our busiest time of the year: Back to School season. If students in your classroom are lacking access to a computer or laptop, make sure to visit the request page to see what options are available to you.

Finally, on September 15, we are challenging you to join us for Offline Hour. Turn off your computer for one hour to understand the impacts of the digital divide. Here are the rules:

💻Pick any hour of the day to participate - no lunch hours or staff meetings

🖥Keep track of how long you last - If you need to return to your computer during the hour, stop the timer!

⌨️Public devices are okay - but if you head to the library, make sure to reflect on the challenges of relying on a public device

📱Make sure to tell us how you did! Tag #BCTechOfflineHour and join in on our threads the day of. What were some challenges you faced?

Through Offline Hour we hope to show British Columbians the positive impact your tech donations have on those who need access to a computer, but may not otherwise be able to afford one.

Your Donations Matter.

See you in September.
