Monthly Update - July 2023

We hope everyone’s summer has been going great so far! It’s monthly update time here at BC Tech, so read on to see what we’ve been up to.

We’d like to thank Fuzzy Logic Information Systems, Hapa Landscape Architecture Collaborative Inc., and Valuize Consulting for their first-time donations to BC Tech. Thank you for choosing to reuse your equipment, rather than recycling it! Your donated devices will find new homes in schools, non-profit organizations, and low-income households.

During July we distributed 505 computers and laptops helping us get to 2000 units distributed since April 1st.

Our website is being upgraded with improved navigation and ability to request different equipment. It will be much easier to filter items through our Featured Inventory and add them to the request form. We are looking forward to launching these changes in August.

We’re getting ready for our Back to School Free Freight Sale, happening from August 21 - September 15! If you’re planning to get a back-to-school request in, do so within this period to receive free shipping on your order.

On July 28 we hosted another Lunch & Learn featuring guest speaker Dougie Kerr, Principal Real-Time VFX Lead at Humanoid Studios. As a youth, he competed in Skills Canada placing second in animation. He may have used our equipment for that competition! Dougie gave great tips to share with our CFS interns about the gaming industry, the importance of our journey, and being bold with outreach to employers. He was met with a very receptive audience and pineapple on his pizza. Thanks again for your time and insights, Dougie!

The end of July concluded Scott’s CFS internship with us. Thanks to Scott for his work and contributions to the Internet for Good project since November.

He has provided us with some reflections for our Where Will They Go? series. Read below to learn more about his experience working with us:

How did you first learn about the CFS+ Intern Program?

I first heard about the IT Technician position through Indeed.

Do you have a fond memory from your internship?

We had a guest speaker come in on a Friday Lunch & Learn to talk to us about Network Security and IT work in general. It was great to have someone provide great and useful advice and offer some guidance this early in my IT career.

What were some of your day-to-day tasks?

Assembling, cleaning, troubleshooting hardware and software issues on laptop or desktop computers. Shipping equipment on pallets and in boxes.

What skills did you learn during your internship that you will be able to use at future jobs?

I was able to work with such a diverse amount of computer hardware over my contract. I feel extremely confident in my ability to disassemble/reassemble and repair just about any laptop or desktop computer handed to me.

What are your future career goals?

I plan on continuing to work on a couple CompTIA+ certifications and hopefully one day I will get a position as a Network Administrator or a job in Network Security.

Your Donations Matter.
