Monthly Update - December 2022

It’s another new year, and we hope you all had a fantastic holiday season! As usual, December was a shorter month for us as we went on winter break. We’re so proud of our hardworking interns who spent the first half of the month making sure as many of our clients got to take home tech as possible before the break. As you can see in the photo below, many families were overjoyed to receive this gift before the holidays.

In December 3 new donors found us and decided to do good with their retired technology. Thank you to Oscar Correa, Pacific Ora, and Sedgam Canada Ltd. for your generous contributions. Your combined donations saved the 8640 KG of fossil fuels, 792 KG of chemicals, and 180 tons it would have taken to manufacture new computers.

Finally, December marked the end of Luke, Reilly, and Matt’s internships. We really enjoyed having them with us, and wish them all the best for their futures! Reilly was with us for a year, and was able to tell us more about his experience for Where Will They Go?, a segment where we interview CFS Internship alumni. Here’s what he had to say:

How did you first learn about the CFS+ Intern Program?

I first learned about the CFS+ Intern Program through a Youth & Young Adult Employment & Education Program that I participated in.

Do you have a fond memory from your internship?

I have many fond memories from my internship that I will remember whether it be having a fun lunch break with my co-workers, having an educational talk about different technology standards, or being able to get work experience on lots of different types of hardware, but most importantly being able to learn from my experiences and teach others.

What were some of your day-to-day tasks?

Some of my day-to-day tasks during my internship would include:

  • Repairing/troubleshooting desktops and laptops with hardware or software related issues so the systems shipped out will function without hiccups for the clients that received them;

  • Refurbishing products like desktops, laptops, monitors, or keyboards and mice making sure they can look as close to mint as possible;

  • Packing products for various order types be it for displays, peripherals, or computers of varying sizes in boxes or on pallets.

What skills did you learn during your internship that you will be able to use at future jobs?

I feel I have been able to learn or refine a good number of skills during my internship, some of them being:

  • The valuable hands-on experience with lots of computer hardware has given me a new level of confidence in working on and repairing computer systems;

  • Through my experiences as an intern, the ability to have the patience to diagnose and troubleshoot problems and issues presented to me while working has been of great use here and will be in the future;

  • Being a team player and helping out other interns and learning from each other has been valuable experience to take away from here during my time as an intern.

Just to name a few.

What are your future career goals?

My current future career goals are to take my experiences and skills from my time here and further expand my education in the ever-expanding tech industry to find a field that I am truly passionate about!

Thanks for tuning in for another Monthly Update with BC Tech for Learning, and we look forward to seeing what 2023 will bring us.

Your Donations Matter.
